Nabadwip and Mayapur Dham are the holi places for Hinduism for Mandirs,Maths and Temples.It is a great historical place of West Bengal.In past,it was the capital of Bengal Empire under the reign of Balai Sen and Lakshman Sen,the famous rulers of Sena Empire(1159-1206).In 1202,Bakhtiyar Khilji attacked Nabadwip and old king Lakshman Sen left the capital.This victory paved the way for Muslim rule in Bengal.The city Nabadwip was formed by nine islands which were Antardwip,Simantadwip,Rudradwip,Madhyadwip,Godrumdwip,Ritudwip,Jahnudwip,Koladwip & Modadrumdwip.There are 18 high and higher Secondary Schools and a college namely Nabadwip Vidyasagar College affiliated under University of Kalyani.There are 17 clubs and Sanghas in Nabadwip to regulate about 11festivals in a year as named Pohela Boishakh(April),Rath Yatra(July),Ganga puja(June),Jhulan Purnima(August),Durga puja(Sept/Oct),Ras Festival(Oct/Nov),Saraswati puja(Feb/March),Dol Purnima or Yatra(March),Gaura Purnima(Birth day of Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu) in Feb-March) and Chatra Sale(March/April).The main attractions are Ras Utsab and Dol Yatra and huse peoples are coming here from all States of India and foreign world.Nabadwip is situated on the western bank of the Bhagirathi river.In past Nabadwip was a center of learning and philosophy.Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was born in Mayapur of Nabadwip and he was a great Vaishnava saint and social reformer of bhakti movement(1486-1533).For his kindness of love,Nabadwip became a place of important pilgrimage centre in Bengal.The names of railway station of this area are Nabadwip Dham and Bishnupriya and it is at a distance of 105km from Howrah Station and 112km from Sealdah Station on Bandel-Katwa-Azimganj section of Eastern Railway.Nabadwip Ghat is an other Station from Sealdah Divn. It has very good railway communication with north Bengal,Assam,Bihar,Odisha and Kolkata. Bus services are available for Nabadwip from Esplanade,Bendal,Katwa,Burdwan,Krishnagar and Shantipur.Dwadas Shib Mandir is another popular temple in Nabadwip and it was built up in 1835.It is basically famous for its exquisite floral design and a large number of pilgrims come here in Mahashibratri.
Sonar Gouranga temple is one of most famous temple for its golden Shrine of great social reformer and saint,Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and his footwear has been kept here in a glass case.Pratap Chandra Goswami,a follower of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu constructed this temple.It is now a seat of Gauria Vaishnav.It is situated besides Sribas Angan and lies opposite to Sri Samajbari Asram.
The ISKCON Tample of A.C. Bhaktivedanta,the Saraswat Adwaita Math and the Chaitanya Gaudiya Math are the important Temples at Mayapur.During Holi(DOL) festival Rashyatra,Mayapur presents itself as a center of harmony,amity,fraternity and festivity.
