Gangasagar is known as Sagardwip, a holy place and sea beach in South 24,Parganas,West Bengal.It is famous for Kapil Muni Temple or Ashram and the Hindu pilgrimage centre in India.Every year on Makar Sankranti (Mid-Januari) pilgrims from all over India,gather at Sagardwip for a holy dip at the confluence of river Gang and Bay of Bengal and offer puja at Kapil Muni Ashram.A largest Mela is organised in this time.Sagardwip is 135km away (4hrs) from Kolkata.A break journey is required to go to Sagardwip.Esplanade to Harwood Point(Lot No-8) or Namkhana(108km) by bus or local train,Namkhana at 14.20hrs &21.30hrs/2hrs,40minutes from Sealdah,South Section. Kachuberia is opposite side of Harwood Point after crossing the river Muriganga by boat.So many transports,bus,minibus,trekker are available to go to Sagardwip(30km) from Kachuberia.In other way from railway station,Kakdwip,one can cross the river Muriganga to reach Chemaguri by launch and from Chemagiri,he can go to Sagardwip by bus(10km).The name of Sagardwip was mentioned in many tales of Hindu mythology,Ramayana,Mahabharata.Our great poit,Rabindranath Tagore wrote about the place of Sagardwip in his story and also Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay described about Sagardwip in his novel.There are so many tourist lodges,Youth Hostel in Sagordwip.Also single or more dormitory accommodation are available in Dharamshala of Bharat Sevasram Sangha, Kapil Muni's Sangha and Sankaracharya Ashram.For day and night staying,there are two place like P WD Bunglow and Zila Parishad Bungalow for family in Sagordwip.
